The Hudson Kitchen talks Food Entrepreneurship
Today, Djenaba Johnson-Jones of the Hudson Kitchen talks Food Entrepreneurship. If you haven’t noticed the number of local food crafters is on the rise. The increased number of Cottage Food Laws in the U.S. is paving the way for small-scale food production. Look around your community. Do you see new food trucks and farmers’ markets? The number of forward-thinking food producers is taking over the startup scene. Unfortunately, New Jersey does not have a cottage food law.
Why? New Jersey’s main justification for not allowing cottage food production is to protect the public’s health and safety. As a result, New Jersey is not willing to do what 47 other states are. Pass a cottage food law!
Health, cooking, diversity, and convenience is driving food entrepreneurs to be innovative. According to Neilson.com, “67% of Americans say they will be prioritizing healthy or socially conscious food purchases in 2018.” Cottage Food Operators give consumers the opportunity to make choices. Introducing folks to unique and nostalgic foods.
What does this mean for food startups? First of all, it’s a clear indication consumers are seeking something different. As a result, we will see more and more food crafters taking their product from kitchen to market. How will these opportunities come to light for food crafters if there is an absence of a Cottage Food Law?
The solution is found in the Hudson Kitchen. Founder and CEO, Djenaba Johnson-Jones of the Hudson Kitchen shares with us how she is making a difference in the lives of local food producers. Djenaba admits this was not the path she planned. She sort of fell into the business of small-scale food production and discovered she could help those in the startup phase of their business.
