Sample Labels

You are here:

Let’s get to the basics of creating a food label. As a food entrepreneur, you will follow the labeling rules and regulations for your Cottage Food state.

Below are two sample labels. One uses a processed product, like cake mix and the other is a scratch-made cake. When printing your labels, you may use a personal computer or professional printing vendor. Consider using water-proof labels so the ink does not run when it comes in contact with water (rain). Use labels that affix easily to the package of the product.

LABEL #1 – COMMERCIAL MIX

If you were to add anything extra to the cake mix, add the ingredients after the ingredient mix listing. You would do the same if you add something to the frosting.

LABEL #2 – SCRATCH PRODUCT

Review the label for the Chocolate Chip Cookies with Pecans. Some cottage food laws require you place “Made in a Home Kitchen” on the product label. You may also be asked to post any Permit numbers on your label. This is not required by all Cottage Food Laws, so always check the cottage food requirements in your state.
