Great Food Label Examples

Let’s get to the great food label examples. As a food entrepreneur, you will follow the labeling rules and regulations for your Cottage Food state.

All Cottage Food states require food labels. Unfortunately, they are not all the same. The list of ingredient is required on all labels, but some require that the food manufacturer indicate they are a home-based food business. The product label is placed across the front of the product and the ingredient label across the back of the product (unless otherwise directed).

It is not wise to place a label under the product so the customer must turn the product upside-down in order to read it. You may also use one large label to display both the product and ingredient information.

Visit the Cottage Food map, locate your state and review the labeling requirement for your state or county. Allergen statements are also not mandatory for all states.

There are eight foods, and ingredients defined as major food allergens. These foods account for 90 percent of all food allergies:

  • milk
  • egg
  • fish, such as bass, flounder, or cod
  • crustacean shellfish, such as crab, lobster, or shrimp
  • tree nuts, such as almonds, pecans, or walnuts
  • wheat
  • peanuts
  • soybeans

Below are two sample labels. One uses a processed product, like cake mix and the other is a scratch-made cake. Use water-proof labels, use a personal computer or professional printing vendor. Waterproofing assures the ink will not bleed over the packaging and can affix easily to the product package.
